SMAS Facelift vs DEEP PLANE Facelift
Both are popular techniques for facial rejuvenation, but they differ in their approach and the results they deliver. Each technique has its advantages, and the best choice varies by individual needs and goals. Surgeons also combine this procedure with a necklift, double chin liposuction or blepharoplasty (eyelid correction) to maximize the visual anti-aging effect.
Choosing between the two. The choice between a SMAS and a DEEP PLANE facelift depends on the patient’s facial structure, the degree of aging and sagging, and the desired outcomes. It is also dependent on the surgeon’s expertise and comfort with each technique. The deep plane facelift requires more technical skill and experience due to the complexity of working beneath the SMAS layer.
SMAS Facelift
SMAS stands for Superficial Musculo-Aponeurotic System. This is a layer of tissue that covers, surrounds, and attaches to the deeper structures of the face and neck, primarily the muscles that are responsible for facial expressions.
Repositioning the SMAS layer: This technique adjusts this layer by surgically repositioning it to achieve a more youthful appearance. The skin and the SMAS layer are treated as two separate entities; the SMAS is tightened or lifted, and then the skin is redraped over the newly enhanced framework.
Benefits: The SMAS facelift is effective at addressing moderate sagging and jowling. It can create a more natural-looking lift by tightening the underlying muscle and connective tissue.
Recovery and Results: Patients typically experience a recovery time of 2-3 weeks. The results are durable and can last anywhere from 10 to 15 years, helping to reduce the appearance of aging in the mid to lower face and neck.
DEEP PLANE Facelift
DEEP PLANE is a more advanced technique that goes deeper than the SMAS facelift. It targets the same SMAS layer but goes beneath it to reposition the entire composite of muscles, fat, and skin together. This technique involves:
Undermining beneath the SMAS: The surgeon works under the SMAS, releasing it from deeper attachments to the facial bones and muscles, allowing for more comprehensive repositioning of the facial anatomy.
Benefits: This approach is particularly effective for patients with significant facial sagging and deeper wrinkles. It can achieve more dramatic and natural-looking results by allowing for more extensive manipulation and repositioning of the facial tissues.
Recovery and Results: The recovery is no longer than that of a SMAS facelift. The results, however, are often considered more rejuvenating and can last longer, providing a significant improvement in facial aesthetics.
